Spider veins, also called telangiectasia, are small superficial veins that often appear on the legs or face and may be related to pressure in the venous system.
Causes and Symptoms
Spider veins usually appear as tiny clustered lines on the legs or face. They are often painless, but some patients develop itching, swelling, or leg discomfort.
Common contributors include heredity, obesity, hormonal change, age, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and sun exposure.
Management Options
Supportive measures include compression stockings, leg elevation, weight management, and avoiding prolonged standing when possible.
Treatment is often pursued for cosmetic reasons, but it can also be part of a broader venous evaluation when symptoms suggest deeper reflux or another underlying problem.
