Venous ultrasound uses sound waves to assess blood flow in the veins, helping the care team identify clots, reflux, and other causes of leg swelling, pain, spider veins, or varicose veins.
What It Evaluates
Venous ultrasound is an office-based sound-wave study used to check for blood clots in the veins and to identify underlying causes of spider veins, varicose veins, and chronic leg swelling.
In current use, it is also central to evaluating reflux patterns, venous insufficiency, and chronic swelling or discomfort in the legs.
How It Helps Treatment Planning
Venous ultrasound helps determine whether symptoms are being driven by acute clot, chronic venous reflux, superficial vein disease, or another venous circulation problem.
That mapping is what guides whether the right next step is compression-based care, additional clot treatment, or a vein procedure discussion.
